Why Attitude Matters

Think Positive

It's never harmed anyone!

A smile a day keeps the doctor away. Positive psychology studies indicate a positive attitude, along with an optimistic outlook and positive thinking, can bring better health and greater happiness. Research suggests positive or optimistic people experience less nervous system, inflammatory and cardiovascular activity than people who are downbeat. You can stay positive by focusing on the good aspects of your life, making time for what you enjoy and not dwelling on bad experiences.

The mind is known to affect the body and health at least as much as external factors. Altering your mind set can open up a whole new world; this is the power of positive thinking.

Stress and depression are widely regarded as having adverse affects on health, signifying that mental illness can have a physiological effect on the body. Studies have found that people who suffer from depression are at higher risk for heart disease and other illnesses. What is not often mentioned is the opposite point: that positive mental attitude has an advantageous effect on the body. Scientific research confirms this, showing that a positive outlook on life leads to improved health.

Positive attitude, positive thinking, and optimism are now known to be a root cause of many positive life benefits - the good life and well being. You'll live longer and be healthier and happier with a positive attitude toward life.

What exactly is Attitude?

Attitude is a mental position relative to a way of thinking or being; a leaning toward that which you believe. A positive attitude is the inclination to generally be in an optimistic, hopeful state of mind.

A positive attitude and optimistic thinking early in life predict health and well being in later years. Studies have shown there is a direct link between an optimistic attitude early in life, and good health later on.

Even if you have been a pessimistic, negative thinker all your life, it's not too late to change your way of thinking and reap the benefits a positive attitude can bring. The chances are that you have come to this website with the aim of improving your health, and lowering your cholesterol levels. The majority of the information we provide is aimed at diet and exercise, and it is well known that both are major factors in how we feel - a fit person will generally feel more energetic towards life, and thus generate a positive attitude naturally, but it is no harm to try to give your mind a helping hand.

Smile list

One simple exercise that is helpful in maintaining a positive attitude is to make a 'smile list'. On a sheet of paper write a list of ten things in your life that make you smile. These are naturally different for each person, but some examples may be the love of a friend or relative. A keepsake you particularly love, a walk you take by the sea, a view that took your breath away, or even a story that touched your heart. It is a very personal thing, and you do not need to share it with anyone else, just have it to look at whenever you feel a little down, and let it make you smile.
